JERICHO \u2013 Vermont bears are in the news\u00a0again<\/a>\u00a0today after yet another administrative tussle with the state\u2019s Department of Fish and Wildlife. This latest ursine uprising comes in response to\u00a0new regulations\u00a0<\/a>on bear hunting in Vermont that were\u00a0approved by the state<\/a>\u00a0last week. A spokesperson for the bears strongly denied the claim by wildlife officials that the revised rules would \u201dreduce conflicts between humans and bears.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019ve got it all backward,\u201d she argued.\u00a0 \u201cWe bears were here first. They keep forgetting that possession is nine-tenths.\u201d<\/p>\n

In a stinging formal rebuke to the regulators, the bears have delivered a seven-hundred page manifesto challenging the new rules.\u00a0 The document was endorsed by more than two-thirds of Vermont\u2019s six-thousand black bears and one visiting polar bear (who has since applied for residency). “It\u2019s just a first draft,\u201d the bruins\u2019 spokesperson growled, \u201cbut turnabout is fair play. Wait until they see the long version. If they want paperwork, we\u2019ll swamp them in paperwork.\u201d<\/p>\n

A Vermont Fish & Wildlife biologist, who did not want his name used and spoke off the record, took a placating and philosophical approach to the\u00a0contretemps<\/em>. \u201cIt\u2019s really just about helping the bears,” he said, \u201cbut I am not surprised at their reaction. They\u2019re Vermont bears. And Vermonters have always had a fierce streak of independence, going right back to the time of the Allen brothers. Why should they be any different?\u201d<\/p>\n

This olive branch did nothing to mollify the bears. Their spokesperson sharply rebutted the fish and wildlife fence-mending effort.\u00a0\u201cWe won\u2019t be patronized,\u201d she said in disgust. \u201cIn the end it\u2019s just more bureaucratic twaddle. If they\u00a0really<\/u>\u00a0<\/em>wanted to do something to help bears, they would let\u00a0us<\/u>\u00a0<\/em>carry weapons too.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
