MANHATTAN, NY – The Richard Rogers Theater on W 46th street in Manhattan has announced plans to premiere a new Broadway musical based on the popular movie “Super Trooopers” in September of 2019. The musical is being commissioned by the theater to replace its current production of “Hamilton,” which it says is “so overdone at this point.”
“Super Troopers: The Meowsical” will have music written by Stephen Sondheim who, at 88 years old, said that translating the hit movie into music was “the only thing that could have ever brought [him] out of retirement.” The book and lyrics are being written by Jay Chandrasekhar, Kevin Heffernan, Steve Lemme, Paul Soter, and Erik Stolhanske, who also wrote the screenplay for the film, as well as its recent sequel.
The musical will take place entirely in Vermont and will feature new songs like “Shenanigans,” “Afghanistanimation,” and “All Right Meow.” Tickets for preview performances are expected to go in sale later this year.
