DORSET – For anyone in the southern part of the state looking for a vegan alternative to regular vegetables, the Dorset Farmers Market now has a stand selling official vegan produce. While many of the farmers made assurances that their vegetables are also vegan-friendly, one vendor has specifically branded his stand as “100% Vegan and Gluten-Free.”
“I know there’s an interest and a need there,” says Dorset farmer Petey Bardem. “People want to know what they’re buying, and if it fits their lifestyle. Anybody shopping at a farmers’ market has a specific brand vision for their life, and they don’t want to have to ask if something is vegan or not.”
Bardem admits that most vegetables are vegan by definition, but says that many farms also have animals on them, so there is potential for cross-contamination. “You got hogs on your farm? How do I know there ain’t no bacon in my kale then? I mean, sometimes you can’t see the bacon.”
Bardem’s produce is available for sale each Sunday starting at 10 am, for only a slight upcharge.
Just add “free range” and you have nailed it.
Now how are we supposed to make zucchini bread?
